New York State Police said the crash happened around 3:15 p.m. Monday, July 12 in Suffolk County, on the Southern State Parkway, east of Exit 38 in the Town of Babylon.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Range Rover were driving east erratically, and both vehicles attempted to pass between two other vehicles, a Toyota Prius and a Mitsubishi Outlander, which caused the crash, according to state police.

Police said the Range Rover went onto the right shoulder and into the tree line.

The driver of the Mitsubishi lost control of the vehicle, hitting a tree, and the vehicle overturned. The vehicle came to a rest on the right shoulder. Police said the driver of the Mitsubishi, Richard Riggs, of Holbrook, died at the scene.

Witnesses saw the two occupants of the Range Rover being picked up by the Jeep and fleeing the scene, said police.

Police said the Range Rover was later determined to be stolen.

State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call 631-756-3300.
